Astrography Terminology

Spinward refers to the direction of the galactic spin. If viewing the galaxy from galactic north, this is counter-clockwise.

Trailing refers to the opposite direction of the galactic spin. If viewing the galaxy from galactic north, this is clockwise.

Coreward is toward the core, or center (not always the same thing) of the galaxy.

Rimward is away from the center, toward the edge of the galaxy.

Galactic North refers to anything above the central plane of the galaxy.

Galactic South refers to anything below the central plane of the galaxy.

A word about north and south. Though the universe does not prefer one direction over the other, and though designating one side as above or below is arbitrary, the distinction is still useful to us. All maps, and all astrographical references will be made from the perspective of galactic north (as if you are looking down on the galaxy from above).
